Diesel in the UAE: Types, Uses, Quality Standards, and Applications

October 10, 2026 Bhaskar Pandit 6 min read

Summary

  • This guide covers 10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulphur Diesel (EN 590) and Marine Diesel Oil (MDO).
  • Your equipment specification should determine which product you evaluate.
  • A Certificate of Analysis supports the quality review for the relevant batch.
  • UAE petroleum trading requires appropriate authorization.
  • Cross-border orders require clear customs documents, delivery responsibilities, and commercial terms.

If you manage vehicles, generators, heavy equipment, or a vessel, choosing diesel is not simply a matter of comparing prices. You need the right product for the machinery, operating environment, and delivery method.

This guide explains the two fuel categories Ojas coordinates and the checks that can help you avoid specification, documentation, and delivery problems.

What types of diesel are available in the UAE?

This article focuses on two products, including 10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel (EN 590) and Marine Diesel Oil (MDO).

The first is evaluated for compatible road, generator, equipment, and industrial requirements. The second is evaluated for compatible marine engines and auxiliary units.

Product Principal applications Main buyer check
10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulphur Diesel (EN 590) Fleets, generators, heavy equipment, and industrial machinery Equipment specification and Certificate of Analysis
Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) Vessel engines, auxiliary units, workboats, and port-side equipment Machinery specification and marine delivery documents

These products are not interchangeable. A road fleet and a vessel may both use diesel-based fuel, but their machinery and documentation requirements differ. Start with the manufacturer’s fuel requirement before reviewing an offer.

Where is each diesel product used?

10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulphur Diesel (EN 590), also described as ULSD or automotive gas oil in relevant commercial contexts, can support fleet continuity, site fuel planning, generator fuel supply coordination and production continuity.

The Ojas product designation states sulfur at or below 10 parts per million. Confirm this and the other agreed parameters through the specification and Certificate of Analysis.

Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) is intended for compatible marine engines, auxiliary units, workboats, offshore equipment, and port-side operations. Fujairah is relevant to marine inquiries because the Port of Fujairah identifies the area as a major anchorage and bunkering hub.

What quality and document checks matter?

Quality review starts by matching the product in the quotation with the fuel required by your machinery.

The Certificate of Analysis should support the relevant batch and the parameters agreed upon in the commercial documents. Do not rely only on a verbal grade description.

Buyer check Document Why it matters
Product and grade Quotation and specification sheet Confirms what you are ordering
Batch properties Certificate of Analysis Supports review of measured characteristics
Quantity Order confirmation and delivery note Supports reconciliation
Commercial terms Quotation and invoice Records payment and responsibilities
Marine delivery Bunker Delivery Note, where applicable Supports bunker records

For a marine order, confirm whether a Bunker Delivery Note applies and ensure its details match the vessel and delivery.

For a land-based order, check the delivery note against the agreed quantity and receiving location. Resolve inconsistencies before accepting the delivery.

Who regulates petroleum trading in the UAE?

Federal Law No. 14 of 2017 states that a person may not trade petroleum products in the UAE without a licence issued according to a Trading Permit. The law includes import, distribution, transport, sale, and purchase within petroleum-product trading activities.

Buyer due diligence should therefore extend beyond price. Check the supplier’s identity, relevant authorization, product description, quality documents, and delivery-party details. The law applies across the UAE, including free zones, special development zones, and investment zones.

How do you place a bulk diesel order?

A useful inquiry gives the coordinator enough information to assess the requirement without repeated follow-up. Provide the exact product, volume, delivery location, required date, application, and any site or vessel restrictions.

Ojas can then arrange source alignment, documentation, and delivery requirements through Supply Coordination or Bulk Supply Planning.

  1. Select 10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulphur Diesel (EN 590) or Marine Diesel Oil (MDO).
  2. State the volume, location, and required date.
  3. Explain the intended application and access conditions.
  4. Review the specification, Certificate of Analysis, and quantity records.
  5. Confirm payment terms and delivery responsibilities.

Ojas applies a minimum order quantity of 13,000 Imperial Gallons to both products. For European buyers, this is approximately 59,100 liters, or roughly 49 metric tons of diesel, depending on density. Standard payment terms are Upfront, Cash on Delivery, or Bank Transfer on Delivery Before Offloading.

Product availability, pricing, and delivery lead time remain subject to market conditions, product source, destination, and commercial terms agreed at the order stage.

What should cross-border buyers confirm?

A cross-border order needs more than product and price confirmation. Through Import/Export Facilitation, Ojas can coordinate eligible enquiries through Jebel Ali, Fujairah, Hamriyah, or Khalifa. Confirm the destination specification, counterparty checks, and shipment responsibilities before execution.

Dubai Customs lists an invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin, and permits from restricted entities among the documents used for a customs declaration. The exact requirement depends on the declaration, cargo, and applicable controls.

The contract should identify the chosen ICC Incoterms 2020 rule and named place or port. These rules allocate delivery obligations, costs, and risks between buyer and seller. They do not replace the product specification, payment clause, or destination compliance checks.

Frequently asked questions

1. What does 10 PPM diesel mean?

For Ojas, it means 10 PPM Ultra-Low-Sulphur Diesel (EN 590), with sulphur at or below 10 parts per million under the stated product specification.

It is evaluated for compatible fleets, generators, equipment, and industrial operations. Check the specification and Certificate of Analysis before acceptance.

2. Is EN 590 the same as ULSD?

Not exactly. EN 590 identifies an automotive diesel specification, while ULSD is a broader description for diesel with very low sulfur. The terms may appear together in commercial discussions, but you should confirm the contractual standard and supported batch results.

3. What is Marine Diesel Oil used for?

Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) is evaluated for compatible vessel engines, auxiliary units, workboats, offshore equipment, and port-side operations.

Before arranging Marine Fuel Coordination, confirm the machinery requirement, receiving point, and delivery window. Review the Certificate of Analysis and applicable marine delivery documents.

4. What is the minimum order quantity?

The minimum order quantity is 13,000 Imperial Gallons for both confirmed products. There are no product exceptions under the current Ojas commercial policy. Include the full volume, delivery point, required date, and application when submitting your inquiry.

5. What payment terms does Ojas accept?

Ojas accepts Upfront, Cash on Delivery, or Bank Transfer on Delivery Before Offloading. These options apply across the confirmed products and ports. The selected option, currency, amount, and payment sequence should appear clearly in the commercial offer.

Request Supply Coordination

If you are preparing a diesel inquiry, start with the information that affects execution: product, volume, destination, required date, and application.

Add site access, vessel details, delivery constraints, and document requirements where relevant. Ojas coordinates requirements with product sources and qualified delivery parties. It does not claim to own, guarantee, or stock fuel.

Review the products and Supply Coordination services before submitting a quote request. A complete inquiry allows the offer to address specifications, quantity, payment, and delivery responsibilities without unnecessary follow-up.
